Wonder what those little rating icons next to content on SkyShowtime mean?
We use Kijkwijzer, a content rating system developed by the Dutch Institute for the Classification of Audiovisual Media in collaboration with scientists.
Kijkwijzer’s rating system flags potentially harmful content as well as the minimum maturity level recommended to watch a film or TV show, so you can decide whether to play that content or not and it’s made of seven age and six content rating icons.
Age rating icons
Kijkwijzer’s age recommendations are all ages, 6 years, 9 years, 12 years, 14 years, 16 years and 18 years. Click on an age rating icon for more information.

Meaning
Description
All ages
The age recommendation All ages indicates that a film or TV show doesn’t contain harmful images.
6 years
The age recommendation 6 years has been developed to protect young children from scary and violent images. Younger children can be especially sensitive to this.
9 years
From the age of 9, children start to understand whether the content they see in a film or TV show is real. That’s why some images are given the age recommendation of 9 years.
12 years
This age recommendation protects children between the ages of 10 and 12, as they start to look at the world in a different way and become easier to influence than adolescents.
14 years
At this age, children are increasingly using film and television to learn 'social' lessons, such as how to be yourself or how best to relate to others. Therefore, watching dangerous behaviour at this age can cause problems.
16 years
Adolescents around 16 better understand the difference between good and bad, yet they can still be influenced by what they see in films and TV shows.
18 years
The age recommendation 18 years flags films and TV shows that are only suitable for adults.
Content rating icons
Kijkwijzer’s content rating pictograms indicate whether a film or TV show contains violence, fear, sex, discrimination, smoking, alcohol and drugs, and coarse language. Click on a content rating icon to learn more.

Description
Violence
Children who see violence can become aggressive or scared or they can easily start thinking about violence. There are a number of factors that determine how great the chance of these harmful effects is. For example: how real the violence is, whether blood can be seen, or whether the violence is rewarded.
Fear
Scary images can have different effects on different viewers. Depending on age, how realistic the images are, what exactly can be seen and whether the characters themselves are afraid.
Sex
Seeing sex can give young people, who are developing their sexual identity, the wrong idea of what is appropriate. How far the action goes, and how often and clearly it appears, determines the final age recommendation.
Discrimination
Every statement or expression that portrays certain groups of people as 'lesser', for example on the basis of race, religion, sexual preference, gender, or nationality, is considered discrimination by Kijkwijzer. If this occurs in a production and the discriminatory statement or action is not immediately disapproved or penalised, the corresponding icon will be displayed.
Smoking, alcohol, and drugs
If hard drugs or (a lot of) alcohol, soft drugs or tobacco are used in a film or series, it will be given a Kijkwijzer symbol for smoking, alcohol, and drugs. Young people may come to see it as something normal, or even something to try.
Coarse language
Bad language is about rude words, profanity and swearing.
